US MARKET ENTRY / BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
How should a Latin American company prepare to enter the US market?
The US is not a single sales opportunity. A credible entry starts by narrowing the territory, buyer, offer and way of validating demand.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Start US market entry by testing readiness, identifying a specific buyer and region, adapting the value proposition to local alternatives, and defining a small set of commercial hypotheses. Then validate with qualified conversations and measure the pipeline before scaling investment.
Readiness begins inside the company
Before spending on US outreach, check whether the offer can be delivered consistently, which capabilities are needed locally, what the team can support in English and who can respond to a qualified opportunity. Review pricing assumptions, documentation, payment and support paths. Depending on the sector, legal, tax or regulatory requirements need specialist advice.
This is not a yes-or-no label on a company. It is an inventory of what is ready, what requires adaptation and what should be tested. A strong offer in its home market may need a different proof point, purchase path or service model for a US buyer.
Narrow the market until you can name the buyer
“The United States” is too broad as a first segment. Choose an industry, company type, buyer role and initial geography with a defensible reason: existing contacts, specific pain, competitive gap or delivery advantage. List alternatives the buyer already uses and reasons they might switch.
Talk to prospective buyers and partners before scaling campaigns. Ask how the problem is currently solved, which budget owns it and what would make a new supplier credible. Those conversations should refine positioning, not just fill a lead list.
Translate value rather than marketing copy
Localization is more than English-language text. Explain the business problem in the buyer’s terms, show the scope and constraints of the offer, and supply evidence appropriate to that industry. Do not imply US clients, certifications or outcomes unless they can be verified.
Prepare one focused landing page for the target segment, a concise capability narrative, responses to common objections and a clear first conversation. Marketing and demand generation can support the message, but no campaign compensates for a vague proposition.
Choose a route to market and make it testable
Possible routes include direct prospecting, partners, distributors, targeted events and search-driven inbound. Each route has different economics, buying cycles and requirements. Select one or two hypotheses, state what a qualified conversation looks like and assign responsibility for follow-up.
Build a small account universe, with buyer roles and evidence of fit. Record source, contact, stage, next action and objections in one place. An automation workflow can support consistent follow-up after the commercial process is defined.
Use evidence to decide the next territory move
Assess response quality, qualified meetings, buyer objections, proposals and progress through the commercial cycle. A small number of well-documented conversations can be more informative than broad reach without fit. Revisit segment, offer or channel when the evidence disagrees with the initial hypothesis.
The Lobster Rules™ at MKTFINE frames this progression through readiness, positioning and commercial activation. The system has its own presence at thelobsterrules.com; project roles and scope are agreed for each engagement.
FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Straight answers.
Is one US launch strategy enough for every state and industry?
No. Choose an initial segment and geography based on the buyer, sector requirements and delivery capabilities, then expand using evidence.
Does translating a website count as market entry?
No. Translation helps, but the offer, proof, pricing, channels and buying process may all require local validation.
What should we measure in an initial market test?
Qualified conversations, repeated objections, opportunities moving to the next stage and the cost and effort of obtaining them.
